“A relentless pursuit of performance where form follows function.” These are words McLaren uses to describe their process for building their bespoke supercars. Starting on the inside of the 720 S, McLaren utilizes a one-piece carbon fiber tub that now includes the roof to create profound chassis rigidity and strength. The fully active suspension is built to translate every turn into an amazing experience that can make any driver feel like a hero. Perhaps most notable is the thunderous and powerful 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Just dip your foot into that throttle and it will become very evident why nothing else feels like a McLaren. It’s no surprise that the 720 S takes its design cues from the great white shark; like the ocean’s top predator, this supercar is built to hunt apexes on every road it encounters.[1]

The 2018 McLaren 720S Coupé (McLaren 720S) is a mid-engined supercar/hypercar produced by McLaren since 2017. It was introduced into the Forza series in the Top Gear Car Pack for Forza Motorsport 7 and appears in Forza Horizon 4 as standard.[1]

As part of the McLaren Super Series, the 720S was launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as the successor to the McLaren 650S.[2]

Overview[edit | edit source]

Design / Chassis[edit | edit source]

The 720S features twin-hinged butterfly doors and many design features from the McLaren F1, while the 720S's headlights hide air vents that funnel incoming air to two small radiators sitting in front of the wheels.[3] The butterfly doors feature air channels that direct air to the engine.[4] The 720S's rear end features thin LED taillights similar in design to those of the McLaren P1, an active aerodynamic rear wing, and two circular exhaust pipes. The 720S's design takes inspiration from the great white shark and features a teardrop-shaped cockpit.[2] All of the 720S's exterior features result in 50% more downforce than the 650S.[3] The 720S's sporty interior includes a folding driver display and carbon fiber accents.[4]

The 720S features carbon ceramic brakes and comes in three trims: Standard, Luxury, and Performance. The Performance trim, used in the Forza series, comes with extensive use of carbon fiber on the body and 5 Twin-Spoke Lightweight wheels with a Satin Diamond Cut rim finish. The 720S Performance's brakes in the game are colored black with a white printed McLaren logo, while the car can come equipped with Pirelli P Zero or Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.

The 720S has a dry weight of 2,829 lb (1,283 kg)[5][4] and a curb weight of 3,167 lb (1,437 kg).[6]

Engine[edit | edit source]

The 720S is powered by the new McLaren M840T engine, which is a 3,994 cc (4 L; 243.7 in3) twin-turbocharged V8. While essentially a revamped version of the McLaren M838T engine, the M840T has a longer bore by 3.6 mm (0.1 in) and features 41% new components. The M840T in the 720S produces 720 PS (710 hp; 530 kW) at 7,000 rpm and 770 N·m (568 ft·lb) of torque at 5,500 rpm.[5]

The M840T uses twin electrically-actuated twin scroll turbochargers and dry sump lubrication.[5]

Performance[edit | edit source]

  • 0 - 60 mph (0 - 97 km/h): 2.8 seconds
  • 0 - 62 mph (0 - 100 km/h): 2.9 seconds[5]
  • 0 - 100 mph (0 - 161 km/h): 5.5 seconds[5]
  • 0 - 124 mph (0 - 200 km/h): 7.8 seconds[5]
  • Top speed: 212 mph (341 km/h)[5]

In independent testing, the 720S was found to complete a 1/4 mile (402 mi) in as low as 9.7 seconds, placing it within the league of the McLaren P1, LaFerrari, and Porsche 918 Spyder.

Variants[edit | edit source]

McLaren 720S Spider (2019)[edit | edit source]

Main article: McLaren 720S Spider

The McLaren 720S Spider, introduced in December 2018, is the brand's new open top flagship supercar. It introduced a plethora of new paints for the 720S range, including Belize Blue, and is the successor to the 650S Spider.[7]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Forza Motorsport 7[edit | edit source]

The 720S is capable of tackling various tracks with ease due to its hypercar-class handling and acceleration despite not being placed in any dedicated hypercar division or championship. However, its top speed is capped to only 335 km/h (208 mph). Also, under the Exotic GT's homologation restrictions, the 720S's performance is further lowered, making this car unsuitable for S Class races. In R Class races, the 720S is not competitive either.

Forza Horizon 4[edit | edit source]

The 720S is a decent performer in Class S2, but in online races, it is best used in unranked races due to its inferior performance in comparison to the Ferrari F40 Competizione, McLaren Senna, and Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster.

McLaren 720S Coupé PreOrder Car[edit | edit source]

Forza Horizon 4 has a special pre-tuned variant of the McLaren 720S, dubbed the McLaren 720S Coupé PreOrder Car (leaderboard name: McLaren 720S PO), available to players who preordered the game from the Xbox Store. It is tuned to the top of S2 Class (S2 998) and features the following specifications:

  • Power: 901 hp (913 PS; 672 kW)
  • Torque: 630 ft·lb (855 N·m)
  • Weight: 2,425 lb (1,100 kg)

The McLaren 720S PO is widely considered the best McLaren car for circuit racing overall, as it has superior performance over the McLaren Senna, including handling and especially speed. It is also capable of receiving the Racing V12 from the Ferrari F50 GT. If the player did not preorder the game from the Xbox Store and wishes to obtain the 720S PO from the Auction House, they must be very lucky and extremely quick to immediately buy one out as soon as it is listed in the Auction House, or they will fear the wrath of the macros and bots buying out many of Forza Horizon 4's exclusive cars the moment they are auctioned.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The McLaren 720S Coupé is known as just the McLaren 720S in Forza Motorsport 7.
  • The 720S's dashboard switches to Race Mode when the car is actually driven.
  • The 720S's Paris Blue (MSO Defined) color in Forza Motorsport 7 is absent in Forza Horizon 4, having been replaced by Saros (Elite).

Mistakes[edit | edit source]

  • The 720S's weight rating in the Forza games is 2,950 lb (1,338 kg), which is very unrealistic, considering the car's actual weight of 3,167 lb (1,437 kg) in real life,[6] and that the former weight figure is closer to the 720S's dry weight of 2,829 lb (1,283 kg).
  • The 720S's rear engine bay cannot be exposed.
  • The 720S features a wrong paint material for its Paint Group 2. This is not seen on the 720S Spider.
  • The 720S's rear wing is missing its "Aero Brake" feature. This is also not seen on the 720S Spider.
