- “Ayrton Senna was one of the greatest McLaren drivers of all time. To honor his accomplishments on the race track, McLaren has built the ultimate track car. Just because the Senna is street legal by no means implies it belongs among civilized vehicles. The Senna has the [sic] largest power-to-weight ratio and is one of the lightest and most driver-focused cars McLaren has ever built. Simply put, it is the new benchmark for the manufacturer that brought the world the mold-breaking F1 and P1. If the Senna body appears fragmented, it is due to the deliberate purpose of every panel. “Form follows function” is the McLaren mantra that delivers an end result that is not only stunning in appearance but one that delivers uncompromised downforce and aerodynamics, all the while reducing weight and increasing performance. One crack of the Iconel and titanium exhaust will tell you McLaren has created a legend worthy of its legendary namesake.”[1]
The 2018 McLaren Senna is a mid-engined, limited-production hypercar produced by McLaren Automotive since 2018. It is the second model in the McLaren Ultimate Series model lineup, joining the P1 that was produced between 2013 and 2015. It is featured as the main cover car of Forza Horizon 4[2][3] and was added into Forza Motorsport 7 as a free DLC car in the April 2019 update.[1]
Codenamed P15, the Senna is named after famed Formula 1 Driver Ayrton Senna and was designed to be McLaren's most extreme car ever.[4]
Overview[edit | edit source]
The McLaren Senna takes its name from the late Ayrton Senna, a Brazilian Formula 1 driver famous for his victories with the McLaren Formula One Team between the 1988 and 1993 Formula 1 seasons, the former during which he drove the McLaren #12 Honda McLaren MP4/4.[5][1]
Design[edit | edit source]
The Senna is built on a modified version of the McLaren 720S's carbon fiber monocoque, but with a more extreme focus on aerodynamics.[6]
The Senna features many various carbon fiber aerodynamic pieces, from a large adjustable dual-element rear wing and dual-element diffuser to a Formula 1-inspired roof scoop, front and side air intakes, rear air louvers, and large front fenders, as well as a set of mini-bumper canards inside the panel between the front air intakes.[7] In addition, some models of the Senna come with optional windows applied to the sides of the doors.[8] The Senna also uses a triple exhaust outlet configuration, although this doesn't apply to US-spec models, which instead use a double semi-circle exhuast outlet configuration due to non-US spec models being designed to have baffles on the outer two exhausts and a third more restricted exhaust for noise reduction at low speed.[9] US-spec models are consequently louder as a result.[10]
The Senna, due to not having a hybrid powertrain, is down to 2,641 lb (1,198 kg) dry,[11] although in-game, it is somewhat heavier, at 2,800 lb (1,270 kg).[12] It has a curb weight of 3,030 lb (1,374 kg).[13] It has a 42%/58% weight distribution.
Engine[edit | edit source]
The Senna's engine is a 3,994 cc (4 L; 243.7 in3) twin-turbocharged M840TR V8, sourced from the McLaren 720S. It creates 800 PS (789 hp; 588 kW) at 7,250 rpm and 800 N·m (590 ft·lb) of torque between 5,500 rpm and 6,700 rpm.[14][11][15]
Transmission[edit | edit source]
All power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with similar gearing to many of McLaren's other current road cars.[11] It has the following gear ratios:[12]
Final Drive | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
3.30 | 4.00 | 2.60 | 1.90 | 1.50 | 1.20 | 0.98 | 0.81 |
Performance[edit | edit source]
McLaren states that the Senna is capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds, and 300 km/h (186 mph) in 17.5 seconds, later reaching a redline-restricted top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).[16] The in-game version of the car is capable of 0 - 60 mph (0 - 97 km/h) in 2.7 seconds, 0 - 100 mph (0 - 161 km/h) in 5.1 seconds, and a top speed of up to 361 km/h (224 mph),[12] which is reduced to 209 mph (336 km/h) in Forza Motorsport 7.[17] It is also capable of a quarter mile (402 m) time of 10.35 seconds and completing 1 mi (1.6 km) in 24.1 seconds.[17]
With the Race Mode setting, the Senna generates up to 1,764 lb (800 kg) of downforce at speeds of up to 250 km/h (155 mph), a 21.2% increase over the McLaren P1 GTR and a 33.3% increase over the P1.[16]
The Senna has a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 668 PS (659 hp; 491 kW) per tonne, or 3.35 lb (1.52 kg) per horsepower.[16][1] Under curb weight, this changes to 582 PS (574 hp; 428 kW) per tonne, or 3.84 lb (1.74 kg) per horsepower. Either power-to-weight ratio eclipses those of the McLaren P1 GTR (554 PS (546 hp; 407 kW) per tonne, excluding the electric motor), McLaren 720S (501 PS (494 hp; 369 kW) per tonne), McLaren 675LT (497 PS (490 hp; 366 kW) per tonne), and McLaren P1 (476 PS (470 hp; 350 kW) per tonne, excluding the electric motor), making the Senna the McLaren road car with the best power-to-weight ratio.
Variants[edit | edit source]
LEGO Speed Champions McLaren Senna (2019)[edit | edit source]
- Main article: LEGO Speed Champions McLaren Senna
In 2019, LEGO released a LEGO Speed Champions toy version of the McLaren Senna, which was later added to Forza Horizon 4 via the LEGO Speed Champions Expansion.[18]
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
- The McLaren Senna is used in the final chapter of World's Fastest Rentals, "2018 McLaren Senna".
- The McLaren 12C Coupé is the only car capable of receiving the McLaren Senna's M840TR engine as an engine swap option, named "4.0L V8TT" in-game.
- Swapping out the M838T of the 12C with the Senna's M840TR adds power and torque without any change in the weight or weight distribution whatsoever.
Advantages[edit | edit source]
- The McLaren Senna is a well-rounded car, capable of strong acceleration and launch, although its greatest strengths lie in its handling and braking capabilities.
- It is capable of generating up to 1.83 lateral Gs at 120 mph (193 km/h), causing it to turn more sharply than other hypercars.
- It also features very minor wheelspin under 75% to full throttle, allowing it to stick to the road more easily.
- The Senna works as an early-game, handling-based budget alternative to Class X "kings" like the Koenigsegg CCGT, Mosler MT900S, Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione, Apollo Intensa Emozione, etc., as it does not have engine swaps of any type that would increase the amount of CR required for a Class X tune and it can also be bought normally from the Autoshow for 1,000,000 CR.
- Alternatively, the Senna is also decent in Class S2, but mostly on handling-focused routes.
- In Forza Motorsport 7, the Senna being a free DLC car allows players to experience the Hypercar division and R Class Hoppers right from the beginning, meaning that the Senna is likely the first hypercar new players own, instead of the Porsche 918 Spyder.
- In addition, it is more forgiving than the McLaren P1 GTR, and if tuned for R Class, it can dominate on short tracks and medium-length tracks.
Disadvantages[edit | edit source]
- One real disadvantage the Senna has is its somewhat low top speed when compared to cars with a similar Performance Index rating. When tuned for top speed, it is at most 32 mph (51 km/h) slower than the P1, and even with proper upgrading and tuning, the Senna can only reach 256 mph (412 km/h), which falls short of the P1's maximum of 275 mph (443 km/h). Obviously, this also falls behind the 599XX Evo's maximum of 323 mph (520 km/h), MT900S's 300 mph (483 km/h) (311 mph (500 km/h) with drafting), and 991.1 GT3 RS PO's 297 mph (478 km/h).
- At stock, in Forza Horizon 4, the Senna hits a maximum of 361 km/h (224 mph).
- Another shortcoming of the Senna is that it wrongly lacks adjustable downforce at stock, despite that its real life rendition has adjustable downforce and springs from the factory. This reduces tuning potential for the Senna if the player wishes to keep the stock rear wing. Attempting to tune the Senna with its rear end partially submerged into the ground for speed will actually also reduce its top speed.
- Players wishing to drive the Senna in wet conditions must put on the Rally Tire Compound; otherwise, they will receive the "wet penalty", where the Senna's grip drastically weakens on wet roads even more so compared to other similar cars.
- In Forza Motorsport 7, at stock (with homologation removed), the Senna (R 898) is ranked below the McLaren P1 GTR (P 915) in terms of performance, despite having better handling even with a Sport Tire Compound at stock; this is only due to the P1 GTR's superior acceleration and top speed. In addition, the Senna's top speed is lower, at 209 mph (336 km/h), and it is also similarly useless in P Class, although it can generate more power than the P1 GTR, which is restricted to a maximum of 986 hp (735 kW)
- With the homologation restrictor plate added in, along with the Race Front Bumper and Race Rear Wing upgrades, the Senna's top speed is drastically reduced, reducing any competitive potential on speed-focused routes.
Customization[edit | edit source]
The Senna features two advanced paint groups for the body:
- The main body.
- The mini-canards, brake calipers, and rollcage pipes inside the car.
Conversions[edit | edit source]
- Drivetrain
- AWD
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The McLaren Senna is the main cover car of Forza Horizon 4, making it the second McLaren car on the cover of any Forza game, following the McLaren P1 back in 2013's Forza Motorsport 5.[12]
- The Senna was initially leaked for Forza Motorsport 7 on April 20, 2018.[19] It was eventually added to the game on April 2, 2019, 11 months, 13 days after it was leaked.[1]
- It is the second car to debut in Forza Horizon 4 and later appear in Forza Motorsport 7, following the Ferrari GTC4Lusso.
Mistakes / glitches[edit | edit source]
- Curiously, despite being on the cover of Forza Horizon 4, neither the Senna nor the Land Rover Defender 90, Lamborghini Urus (the cover car of the Fortune Island Expansion), and the LEGO Speed Champions McLaren Senna (the cover car of the LEGO Speed Champions Expansion) are featured in the Forza Specials Special Car Theme.
- As with the new and returning cars introduced in Forza Horizon 4, glitch exists with this car where if the player activates the car's lights in Forzavista and exits Forzavista, the car's lights will still remain on until the player enters Forzavista and switches the lights on and off again.
- If the player upgrades the car and sets its ride height to the lowest settings, when the car reaches speeds exceeding 249 mph (400 km/h), it bottoms out into the ground much more so than other cars to the point of being partially submerged even if the player did not actually tune the car that way.
- The Senna's stock rear wing curiously does not have adjustable downforce.
- The Senna's front trunk and rear engine bay cannot be opened due to the car not having been modeled to have a removable front trunk and rear engine bay.
- In Forza Horizon 4, the Senna's thumbnail at the Autoshow originally depicted it in the Delta Red/Mira Orange manufacturer color (the Senna's first manufacturer color in Forza Motorsport 7 before May 2019 and the second in Forza Horizon 4), although the car's first manufacturer color is actually Victory Grey.
- This has been fixed as of Series 10.
- The same fix also applied to Forza Motorsport 7.
- This has been fixed as of Series 10.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
- The Senna's development name, as shown in the game files of Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 4, is the McLaren Wellington (MCL_Wellington_18).[20]
- There are two additional versions of the Senna in Forza Horizon 4, both lacking a preview thumbnail, unobtainable by any normal means, and priced at 1,800,000 CR:
- "Autumn Edition" (AE3), with a PI rating of S2 975, used in the Autumn part of the opening sequence of the game.
- "Summer Edition" (SE3), with a PI rating of S2 981, used in the Summer part of the opening sequence of the game. This was gifted to all players who played the Forza Horizon 4 Demo before Forza Horizon 4 Ultimate Edition was released on September 28, 2018.
- Despite these changes, all three Sennas have the same default specifications and in-game name, although the AE and SE have significantly better handling, with the SE having the best handling in the game.
- The AE and SE are completely unobtainable, even from the Auction House.
- There are two additional versions of the Senna in Forza Horizon 4, both lacking a preview thumbnail, unobtainable by any normal means, and priced at 1,800,000 CR:
- In March 2019, Hot Wheels released a casting of the McLaren Senna with Forza Horizon 4 branding on the packaging. It is internally named "FYB46".[21][22] This casting uses the Victory Gray manufacturer color.
- The Forza Motorsport 7 rendition of the Senna had less manufacturer colors than its Forza Horizon 4 rendition.
- In Forza Motorsport 7, the Senna's brake calipers were colored black by default. In addition, its Victory Grey manufacturer color did not have the additional orange coloring.
- These were fixed in the May 2019 update.
- In Forza Motorsport 7, the Senna's brake calipers were colored black by default. In addition, its Victory Grey manufacturer color did not have the additional orange coloring.
