The Renault R.S.17 is a Formula One race car designed and built by the Renault Sport Formula One Team for the 2017 Formula One season.

The R.S.17 was initially driven by Nico Hülkenberg and Jolyon Palmer.[1] Hülkenberg joined the team after Kevin Magnussen left the team at the end of the 2016 season, while Palmer was replaced by Carlos Sainz Jr. from the 2017 United States Grand Prix onwards.

The R.S.17 succeeded the R.S.16 from 2016 and was replaced by the R.S.18 for 2018.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Specifications[edit | edit source]

The R.S.17 has a 1,600 cc (1.6 L; 97.6 in3) turbocharged hybrid Renault R.E.17 V6 engine that weighs only 319.7 lb (145 kg) and has a bore and stroke of 80 mm (3.1 in) × 53 mm (2.1 in).[2]

The V6 alone makes 740 hp (750 PS; 552 kW) and has a redline of 15,000 rpm. Paired to the V6 are two Motor Generator Units, one Kinetic and another Heat. These produce 161 hp (163 PS; 120 kW) for a total of 901 hp (913 PS; 672 kW).[2] In Forza Motorsport 7, though, the R.S.17's total engine output is increased to 1,110 hp (1,125 PS; 828 kW) and 606 ft·lb (822 N·m) of torque.[3]

With the driver included, the R.S.17 weighs 1,605 lb (728 kg).

Performance[edit | edit source]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Advantages[edit | edit source]

In keeping with the performance of Formula One cars, the R.S.17 features an extreme focus on acceleration, handling, and braking while having a decent top speed that allows it to take on any track, regardless of length. Its acceleration is also extremely quick, reaching 100 mph (161 km/h) in 3.7 seconds even without drag tires and/or AWD.

The R.S.17 has the best handling of any car in the Forza series, beating the Ferrari 641 and McLaren MP4/4. Because of this, it can achieve lap times faster than any other car. In addition, it can dominate over almost every car at the drag strip, falling only marginally behind the Koenigsegg One:1, which can post a much higher trap speed.

Disadvantages[edit | edit source]

The R.S.17 is much more unforgiving than older F1 cars, partially due to its extreme power output that gives it its extreme power-to-weight ratio. Steering too hard can result in a spinout that can completely ruin a clean run. In addition, its top speed is rather low at 351 km/h (218 mph), although it more than makes up for this with its superior acceleration, handling, and braking.
