The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak (VW I.D. R) is an electric prototype race car designed as part of Volkswagen's I.D. Project and included with their R series of cars designed specially for motorsport competition.[1]
Notable for being Volkswagen's first electric race car, the I.D. R is notable for breaking the electric vehicle lap record on the famed Nürburgring circuit with a lap time of 06:05.336, with maximum cornering forces hitting 3.49 Gs, beating the previous record holder NIO EP9's record of 06:45.90.[2]
Overview[edit | edit source]
Design details[edit | edit source]
The VW I.D. R takes the shape of a mid-engined race car, complete with extremely aggressive aerodynamics that include a giant rear wing and a huge front splitter, along with an overall profile resembling that of an LMP1 race car. Its front end features thin curved headlight strips. The doors are hinged at the top, but they must be removed in order for the driver to enter and exit the car.
The I.D. R's interior is stripped, typical of race cars, and features a racing steering wheel with a digital info screen embedded onto it. This screen projects many important vehicle/race-related pieces of information, including current speed and gear, and lap time.
Technical specifications[edit | edit source]
The VW I.D. R comes with two axle-mounted electric motors (one on each axle) that are equipped with active torque distribution and give the car permanent all-wheel-drive. The I.D. R has a total output of 680 PS (671 hp; 500 kW) and 650 N·m (479 ft·lb) of torque, making it have quicker acceleration than even Formula E and Formula One cars. It comes with wide tires, measuring 310/45R18 both at the front and rear.[1]
The I.D. R also has a single-speed fixed gear transmission with adjustable final drive and first gear ratios of 4.12 and 2.00, respectively.[3]
Differential | Acceleration | Deceleration | Balance |
---|---|---|---|
Front | 8% | 0% | - |
Rear | 93% | 62% | - |
Center | - | - | 55% |
Performance[edit | edit source]
The I.D. R is capable of accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.25 seconds and a drag-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).[1]
Records[edit | edit source]
The I.D. R not only became the first car to complete the Pikes Peak hill climb in under 8 minutes (07:57.148), breaking the Peugeot 206 Turbo 16's outright record set by Sébastien Loeb, but it also became the fastest electric car to complete the hill climb.[4] It currently holds the electric vehicle lap record at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit, with 06:05.335.[2]
Variants[edit | edit source]
- 2018 Volkswagen #94 Volkswagen Motorsport I.D. R Pikes Peak (#94 VW I.D. R): The #94 VW I.D. R, driven by Romain Dumas, was driven to complete the Pikes Peak hill climb in under 8 minutes.[5] This variant is featured in Forza Horizon 4.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Forza Horizon 4[edit | edit source]
The #94 VW I.D. R was added in Series 14, available during the Horizon Autumn Season as a reward for completing the "I Say... Ten" Trial event.
Due to its massive amount of downforce generated, the I.D. R undoubtedly has the best handling and braking of any car in the game, generating lateral G forces in excess of 3.2 Gs and coming to a stop in under 170 ft (51.8 m) with the brakes fully activated. Its acceleration is also strong all the way to 220 km/h (137 mph). These traits make the I.D. R the "king" of handling-focused routes like the Horizon Festival Circuit and Ambleside Village Circuit, in both Classes S2 and X. On the other hand, the I.D. R's extreme downforce serves to hold it back in the top speed department, making it only 256 km/h (159 mph) at stock, making it noticeably slower on speed-focused routes than the Ferrari F40 Competizione, Mosler MT900S, Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione, Koenigsegg CCGT, and even the Apollo Intensa Emozione.
Unlike the Rimac Concept Two, another electric car, and similar to the Tesla Model S P90D with Ludicrous Mode that was featured only in Forza Horizon 3, the I.D. R can have its electric motor and battery parts upgraded. Doing so puts it at 1,006 hp (750 kW) and 719 ft·lb (975 N·m) and costs 2,700 CR. This also results in the I.D. R's top speed increasing, albeit not by much unless the player reduces the downforce on both the front and rear ends.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The VW I.D. R is the first electric race car to appear in the Forza Horizon series.
- In a similar manner to the unobtainable McLaren P1 Owen's Edition, the player's license plate text is directly embedded onto the VW I.D. R's body, directly to the left of the Volkswagen badge sitting immediately in front of the large rear wing.
- This also makes the VW I.D. R the first playable car in the Forza series where its license plate text is directly embedded onto the car itself as opposed to an actual license plate being placed at the rear of the car.
