The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E 350 d 4MATIC All-Terrain “Project E-AT” (with "E-AT" standing for "E-Class, All-Terrain") is a Top Gear-modified version of the W213 Mercedes-Benz E 350 d 4MATIC.[1] It is available in Forza Horizon 4 from Series 11 onwards as the first car unlockable through the The Top Gear Horizon Special Horizon Story.[2][3]

Overview[edit | edit source]

Design[edit | edit source]

The Project E-AT comes in a Dakota Brown body color with orange accents and trimming, as well as four 180 mm (7.1 in) PIAA LED race spots on the roof rack in the same pattern as the bumper-mounted versions on the famed Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 named the "Red Pig".[1] On the roof, a spare wheel, pickaxe and mattock on each side in the custom carriages, and a pair of jerry cans, along with a towrope and heavy-duty jack, are prsent. In addition, an access ladder has been added.[1]

At the front lies a sunshade/aero device, designed and fabricated by Ralph Hosier. This device works as a sunshade to push air up and over the spots of the car, all while the stereo cameras in the windscreen still work so drivers in the Project E-AT still have all the anti-crash and monitoring systems that are shipped as standard with the car.[1]

The wheels are "aero" items found in an often-overlooked part of Mercedes-Benz option lists, likely derived from a taxi-spec Mercedes-Benz E 200.[1] In the UK, standard rims stand at 20 inches, but are reduced to 18 inches for clearing of the large brakes the Project E-AT has. It uses BF Goodrich A/T K02 255/55R18s.[1]

Engine[edit | edit source]

The Project E-AT uses a 2,987 cc (3 L; 182.3 in3) turbodiesel V6, internally named the OM642, which makes 258 PS (254 hp; 190 kW) and 620 N·m (457 ft·lb) of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm.[1][4]

Drivetrain[edit | edit source]

The Project E-AT retains the all-wheel-drive system and nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission from the W213 E 350 d.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

The Project E-AT is obtained by progressing through the The Top Gear Horizon Special. As with the Top Gear Track-Tor and Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6x6, the E-AT cannot be bought at the Autoshow.

Conversions[edit | edit source]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Despite that Mercedes-Benz is displayed as "M-B" in car leaderboard names from Forza Motorsport 7 onwards, the Project E-AT's leaderboard name retains the old Mercedes abbreviation, thus becoming "Mercedes E 350 d".

Mistakes[edit | edit source]

  • Unfortunately, as with a number of cars in Forza Horizon 4, the Mercedes-Benz E 350 d 4MATIC All-Terrain “Project E-AT” wrongly uses its real-life metric horsepower (PS) rating as its in-game mechanical horsepower (bhp) rating, becoming 258 hp (192 kW) in-game.
  • The Project E-AT's orange accents and trimming cannot be recolored.
  • The Top Gear logos on the sides of the car cannot be removed, but can otherwise be hidden with white-colored paint or decals.
  • When in interior view, the Project E-AT’s speedometer shows 2 120 MPH Speed marks instead of 140. This has now been corrected.
