There are few imports as legendary as the last of the Supras. In form they scream of their speed potential, and the sound of the 2JZGTE motor is recognizable by any true JDM fan. While those in the street racing scene were already familiar with the highly tunable 2JZ and its ability to destroy American muscle with twice its displacement, it wasn't until Brian and Dom lined up to settle the score at the end of the original Fast and Furious movie that the proof was evident. Sadly, the era of rear-wheel-drive, twin-turbo Supras died in 2002. Thanks to the world of Forza though, you can experience the Supra's power and speed for years to come.
 – Official description[1]

The 1998 Toyota Supra RZ (JZA80) (Toyota Supra '98) is a front-engined turbocharged sports car produced by Toyota from 1993 to 2002 as the highest-performance variant of the fourth generation (A80) Toyota Supra.[2]

The A80 Supra rose to popularity due to its prominent appearance in the movie franchise Fast & Furious, which has multiple modified variants of the A80 Supra that are also featured in the Forza series. Since the beginning of the series in 2005, the Supra RZ has been prominently featured in every mainline installment of the franchise with the sole exception of Forza Motorsport 7.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Design details[edit | edit source]

The A80 Supra has a rounded and modern styling that is different from previous Supra generations, including large headlights and a pair of quad rear lights, which feature a pair of taillights inbetween the reverse lights and turn signals. In addition, some elements from the 2000GT, Toyota's first grand tourer, can also be seen. The A80 Supra's redesign was due to Toyota's desire to place greater emphasis on a more serious high-performance car The Supra RZ features a large fixed rear wing and thin but wide active aerodynamic flaps at the front. Again based on the Toyota Soarer and Lexus SC (Z30), the A80 Supra is more than 340 mm (13.4 in) shorter than the Soarer.[2]

The Supra RZ has a curb weight rating of at least 3,329 lb (1,510 kg) (at most, 3,480 lb (1,579 kg)[3]) and a 53% / 47% front-to-rear weight distribution, making it heavier than the Mazda RX-7 (FD) and Acura/Honda NSX (NA1) but lighter than the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4. Toyota took measures to reduce the weight of this new model. Aluminium was used for the hood, targa top (when fitted), front crossmember, oil and transmission pans, and forged upper suspension A-arms. Other measures included hollow carpet fibers, magnesium-alloy steering wheel, plastic gas tank and lid, gas injected rear spoiler, and a single pipe exhaust. Despite having more features such as dual airbags, traction control, larger brakes, wheels, tires, and an additional turbocharger, the car lost at least 200 lb (91 kg) from its predecessor.

Engine[edit | edit source]

The famed 2JZ-GTE inline-6 engine of the Supra RZ.

The turbocharged A80 Supra models, including the Supra RZ, feature a 3.0 liter, 2,997 cc twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine called the 2JZ-GTE; for exported RZ models, it makes 320 hp (325 PS; 239 kW) and 427 N·m (315 ft·lb) of torque.[4] Upon the A80 Supra's launch in 1993, it was the first Toyota-badged vehicle with a passenger airbag as standard only for the North American market.[4][2]

The twin turbochargers do not operate in parallel, but in sequential mode instead. Initially, all of the exhaust is routed to the first turbine for reduced lag, resulting in boost and enhanced torque as early as 1,800 rpm, where it already produced 407 N·m (300 ft·lb) of torque. At 3,500 rpm, some of the exhaust is routed to the second turbine for a "pre-boost" mode, although none of the compressor output is used by the engine at this point. At 4,000 rpm, the second turbo's output is used to augment the first turbo's output. Compared to the parallel mode, sequential mode turbos provide quicker low RPM response and increased high RPM boost. This high RPM boost was also aided with technology originally present in the 7M-GE in the form of the Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) which is a way of managing the air compression pulses within the intake piping as to increase power.

Drivetrain[edit | edit source]

For the A80 generation, the Supra received a new six-speed Getrag/Toyota V160 manual transmission on turbo models, while the RZ models use the Getrag V161. As with previous Supras, the A80 Supra is rear-wheel-drive.

Performance[edit | edit source]

The Supra RZ, like with the other turbocharged A80 Supras, is capable of accelerating to 97 km/h (60 mph) in as low as 4.6 seconds and complete a quarter mile (402 m) in 13.1 seconds at 175 km/h (109 mph). It has a tested top speed of 285 km/h (177 mph), which is exceeded in every installment of the Forza series.[3]

The standard A80 Supra chassis has also proven to be effective as a road racing platform, including several top 20 and top 10 One Lap of America finishes in the SSGT1 class. In 1994, the A80 managed remarkable 0.95 (200 ft) and 0.98 (300 ft) lateral G skidpad readings.[5] The A80 Supra also features a four-sensor four-channel track tuned ABS system with yaw control whereby each caliper is sensored, and the brakes are controlled individually according to the speed, angle, and pitch of the approaching corner. Once the Supra gets to speed, the active aerodynamic flap at the front bumper opens to suck more air in for optimal performance.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Forza Motorsport 2[edit | edit source]

Forza Motorsport 3[edit | edit source]

Forza Motorsport 4[edit | edit source]

The Supra RZ is available as a reward for reaching Driver Level 20 and is also required for the Toyota Supra RZ Spec event.

Forza Horizon[edit | edit source]

Forza Motorsport 5[edit | edit source]

Forza Horizon 2[edit | edit source]

The Supra RZ is available as a starter car in Forza Horizon 2.

Forza Motorsport 6[edit | edit source]

Forza Horizon 3[edit | edit source]

Forza Horizon 3 is the Supra RZ's last consecutive appearance in the mainline series. It has an additional Horizon Edition variant that has a Drift Skills boost. Although the HE variant's performance can be replicated with the standard Supra RZ, the standard Supra RZ can neither use the extra engine swaps of its HE variant, nor can it have a Drift Skills boost.

Forza Horizon 4[edit | edit source]

As the first Toyota production car to appear in the series since the absence of Toyota production cars from Forza Motorsport 7, the Toyota Supra RZ made its Forza series return in Series 16 of Forza Horizon 4 on December 12, 2019.[6] Like with the Ford Ranger Raptor, the Supra RZ is purchasable from the Autoshow, albeit at a somewhat steep and unrealistic price of 250,000 CR, which is more than 6 times the car's price in Forza Horizon 3. It is also obtainable by participating in The Eliminator and reaching Tier 2.

Unlike previous games, the Supra RZ's engine now has extreme power gains from upgrading the camshafts; when coupled with the Single Turbo aspiration swap, it is capable of a massive engine output of 1,601 hp (1,194 kW) and 1,800 N·m (1,328 ft·lb), which makes it one of the most powerful cars in the game that can have their engine upgraded, behind the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Forza Edition (1,863 hp (1,389 kW)) and Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5/Ford #25/#88 RTR Mustang(1,876 hp (1,399 kW)).

In addition, the Supra RZ now has 3 new engine swaps: it now has access to the RJ Anderson Pro 2 Truck's racing 7.2 L V8 engine and the McLaren F1's 6.1 L S70/2 V12 engine. This makes the Supra RZ the first non-McLaren car to be able to receive an engine swap from a McLaren car. However, the stock engine with the Single Turbo aspiration swap is a better choice than the Supra's available engine swaps in many cases.

With a drift tune, the Supra RZ becomes one of the best drift cars, beating the Formula Drift cars and competing with the Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5 and Ford RTR Mustangs.

The Supra RZ also has a unique Car Mastery tree that offers a Super Wheelspin:
