Among elite supercar heritage the name of McLaren stands tall and, at the blistering edge of performances, lives the P1 GTR. Named after the McLaren F1 GTR, which won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, the GTR is a race-bred hypercar with clear intent to rule the track. As part of McLaren’s GTR Driver Program, owners can receive training in preparation to participate in exclusive racing events. The GTR brings more power and more downforce, as well as a race-prepared suspension to the hypercar table. Look closely and you will notice the mirrors have been moved to the A-pillars to increase visibility and reduce drag. If you are looking for the ultimate offering from the U.K., look no further, the P1 GTR is here.[1]

The 2015 McLaren P1 GTR, officially stylized as McLaren P1™ GTR (with the trademark symbol), is a track day hypercar based on the McLaren P1 road hypercar. It is featured in the Forza series from Forza Motorsport 6 onwards, introduced in said game's Hot Wheels Car Pack DLC.[1]

Unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the P1 GTR was put into production after the 375th and last P1 was built. Only 58 units were made, with each priced at a minimum of US$2.4 million.[2] The car was made as a homage to its race-winning ancestor, the McLaren F1 GTR.[3][4]

Overview[edit | edit source]

Design details[edit | edit source]

The McLaren P1 GTR's dimensions.

The McLaren P1 GTR, designed with upgraded track performance in mind, features aggressive aerodynamics, including a fixed rear wing with DRS capability, a new fixed ride height on race suspension, and a new exclusively designed exhaust with a twin-pipe configuration as opposed to the convex trapezoidal exhaust outlet on the P1.[2] The P1 GTR has a bigger "smile", evidenced by the larger "mouth" on the front bumper. The side mirrors are now mounted on the A-pillar, while the roof of the car is now covered in the main body's color.

The P1 GTR is lighter than the normal P1 by 110 lb (50 kg), down to a weight of 3,186 lb (1,445 kg).[2][3][5] The P1 GTR also features slightly different dimensions from the P1, including a lower height of 45 in (1,143 mm), a length of 185 in (4,699 mm), a 78 in (1,981.2 mm) width, and a 104 in (2,641.6 mm) wheelbase.[5]

Sitting at the front of the car is a pair of 19 inch wheels housing seven-spoke rims and sitting inside 285 mm front tires, while the rear wheels measure 19 inches and sit inside 325 mm tires. All wheels feature 15 inch brake calipers.

Engine[edit | edit source]

The P1 GTR's engine specifications.

The P1 GTR retains the P1's 3,799 cc, 3.8 L twin-turbocharged hybrid M838TQ V8, but with a higher total output of 1,000 PS (986 hp; 735 kW), 800 PS (789 hp; 588 kW) of which is derived from the V8 itself and 200 PS (197 hp; 147 kW) of which is derived from the electric motor, along with a torque output of 1,001 N·m (738 ft·lb), although it is currently unknown whether or not the increase in torque was due to an upgrade in either the electric motor, the V8, or both.[2]

The P1 GTR also produces 20.6 psi (1.4 bar) of boost from its twin turbochargers.

Performance[edit | edit source]

The P1 GTR's more extreme aerodynamics result in 1,455 lb (660 kg) of downforce at 241 km/h (150 mph), 10% more over the standard P1.[6] Consequently, the P1 GTR features moderate handling and braking improvements over the P1.

The P1 GTR is also capable of accelerating from a standstill to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 2.4 seconds and 100 mph (161 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, quicker than the P1's 2.9 and 5.2 seconds, respectively. However, the P1 GTR has a lower delimited top speed of 377 km/h (234 mph), down by around 18 km/h (11 mph).[5]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Advantages[edit | edit source]

  • The McLaren P1 GTR features superior overall performance from the normal P1, including faster acceleration and superior handling and braking.
  • These performance advantages help shave off seconds on lap times compared to the normal P1.
  • In drag racing, the P1 GTR is actually faster than its closest rival, the Ferrari FXX K, even in a quarter mile.
  • Compared to other track-focused cars, the P1 GTR has a rather somewhat high top speed, with 377 km/h (234 mph)).
  • The P1 GTR, with proper tuning, can actually be decent in Class R.

Disadvantages[edit | edit source]

  • The P1 GTR features moderate understeer compared to its closest rivals, the Ferrari FXX K and Aston Martin Vulcan, both of which are inferior in terms of top speed.
  • In addition, the P1 GTR has no conversions available, limiting the number of upgrades it can have.
  • When compared to the McLaren Senna and Apollo Intensa Emozione, the Senna and IE have more downforce and are much lighter, thus having superior handling and braking, while the P1 GTR only has the advantage in acceleration and top speed.
  • In Forza Motorsport 6, just like the FXX K and Koenigsegg One:1, the P1 GTR is hit with the added problem of restrictive usefulness, as all three cars do not qualify for any division in the game, making them unusable in Career Mode races.
  • In Forza Motorsport 7, the P1 GTR's performance is dropped further with homologation, putting it in Class R, where the Lotus Elise GT1, McLaren F1 GT and Senna, and Ferrari F40 Competizione are superior.

Changes from Forza Motorsport 6 to Forza Motorsport 7[edit | edit source]

  • The P1 GTR is now placed in the Hypercar division.
  • Restrictor plate added for homologation in the Hypercar division.
  • Stock PI raised from P 913 to P 915.
  • Top speed slightly increased by 0.1 mph (0.2 km/h).

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The P1 GTR is the only car from Forza Motorsport 6's Hot Wheels Car Pack DLC that isn't a race car but did not appear in Forza Horizon 3.
  • The P1 GTR was leaked for Forza Horizon 4, along with several other cars.[7]
    • The McLaren P1 GTR is one of several cars exclusive to the dev build that still have yet to appear in the final version of the game even though the P1 GTR is one of the top 100 most requested car models by the Forza community to be added to the game.[8]
    • The P1 GTR would most likely be an Extreme Track Toy and be placed in the high end of Class S2, higher than the McLaren Senna (S2 977) and even closer to the Ferrari FXX K (S2 989) and Koenigsegg CCGT (S2 986) in terms of Performance Index rating.
    • A large Forza Horizon 4 car leak that occurred on November 24, 2019 and was posted to the official Forza Discord server lists the P1 GTR as one of the leaked cars under the name MCL_P1GTR_16.[9]
  • The P1 GTR model used in the Forza games is the XP7 GTR prototype.
  • The Forza Street rendition of the P1 GTR does not have a livery.

Mistakes[edit | edit source]

  • The P1 GTR's exterior door inserts on the sides cannot be painted with decals.
  • The P1 GTR's rear wing is always frozen instead of being functional like with the normal P1.
  • The P1 GTR's daytime running lights do not function correctly, as they wrongly sync with the other non-daytime running headlamps.
  • While not technically wrong, the P1 GTR's dashboard should be in Race Mode.
