McLaren M838T engine
The McLaren M838T is a family of 3,799 cc (3.8 L; 231.8 in3) twin-turbocharged 90° V8 engines produced by McLaren Automotive since 2010. The M838T engines are designed and developed in collaboration with Ricardo plc.[1]
Development[edit | edit source]
McLaren bought the rights to the Tom Walkinshaw Racing developed engine, itself based on the Nissan VRH engine architecture,[2] which was designed for the IRL IndyCar Series but never raced. Little of that engine remains in the M838T other than the 93 mm (3.66 in) bore.[3] In only 18 months, Ricardo went from paper to running prototype.
Developed with help from Ricardo, the M838T has a redline at 8,500 rpm, with 80% of the engine's torque being available as low as 2,000 rpm. McLaren claims that the engine has the highest horsepower to CO 2 emission ratio of any current production engine.[4]
The M838T is built at Ricardo's engine assembly facility in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex.[5] The turbochargers are supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and are different units from those used in Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions. The ATS GT, an Italian supercar produced by Automobili Turismo e Sport, is based on the McLaren 650S Coupé and, appropriately, features the M838T engine.
Naming[edit | edit source]
The M838T's engine naming nomenclature can be broken down into the following: "M" represents McLaren, "838" represents a V8 engine with a 3.8 L displacement, and "T" represents a twin-turbocharged engine.
