The 2014 McLaren 650S Spider (650S Spider[1]) is a mid-engined convertible supercar produced between 2014 and 2016. Part of the McLaren Super Series model range, the 650S Spider acts as the spider variant of the McLaren 650S Coupé. It was added to Forza Horizon 4 in Series 3, as part of the Car Pass, alongside the Aston Martin Vantage (2018), on November 22, 2018.
It was succeeded by the McLaren 720S Spider in December 2018.
Overview[edit | edit source]
First announced in February 2014, the McLaren 650S Spider offers nearly identical performance to the 650S Coupé, but with a higher weight rating by 88 lb (40 kg). Up to 25% of the parts in the car are new compared to those in the previous 12C Spider.
Design[edit | edit source]
The 650S Spider takes the preceeding 12C Spider as the base and inherits the combined rear of the McLaren 12C GT3 and 12C road car, as well as the McLaren logo-shaped headlights from the McLaren P1. It also retains the 650S Coupé's 42% / 58% weight distribution. The Spider has the same structural stiffness as the Coupé primarily because the Carbon MonoCell chassis was designed without a roof.[2] The Spider features a three-piece retractable hardtop carbon fiber roof which has an operation time of 17 seconds.
Technical specifications[edit | edit source]
The 650S Spider shares its rear-driving seven-speed SSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and 3,799 cc (3.8 L; 231.8 in3) twin-turbocharged M838T V8 with the 650S Coupé, with exactly identical specifications, including 650 PS (641 hp; 478 kW) at 7,250 rpm and 678 N·m (500 ft·lb) of torque at 6,000 rpm.[3] The 650S Spider is 88 lb (40 kg) heavier than the coupé, weighing 3,236 lb (1,468 kg).
Performance[edit | edit source]
The 650S Spider's performance is nearly identical to the 650S Coupé, with 0 - 60 mph (0 - 97 km/h) in 2.9 seconds,[3] 0 - 100 mph (161 km/h) in 5.8 seconds,[3] and a top speed of 329 km/h (204 mph).
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
- The 650S Spider shares all of the same gameplay traits, advantages, and disadvantages as the 650S Coupé, with the added disadvantage of a lower Performance Index due to the increased weight.
- The increased weight results in slightly worse handling, while the increased drag from the hardtop roof decreases top speed slightly.
- As of Series 5, the 650S Spider is now always driven with the roof down. However, the windows remain up.
Customization[edit | edit source]
The 650S Spider comes with a Liberty Walk widebody kit available as an Upgrade Preset, identical to the one on the 650S Coupé, except with a different set of rims.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- As the 650S Spider's speedometers use imperial units (e.g. miles per hour) due to being a US-spec model, the 650S Spider may have already been in development even as early as Forza Horizon 2, when the 650S Coupé was added.
Mistakes[edit | edit source]
- In gameplay, any vinyls applied to the removable hardtop roof will become distorted at the front. This also applies to LOD models.
