The BMW M8 GTE is a GTE-class endurance race car by BMW.
The M8 GTE was introduced as the successor to the BMW M6 GTLM/GTE/GT3 that last raced in 2017. It is based on the upcoming BMW M8 and marks BMW Motorsport's return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans after a six-year hiatus.[1]
Overview[edit | edit source]
The BMW M8 GTE is the first BMW manufactured from scratch as an LM GTE homologated race car, rather than being built on a preexisting platform.
Design / Chassis[edit | edit source]
The M8 GTE features several cutting-edge technologies and concepts, including Additive Manufacturing for rapid component prototyping, as well as a transaxle, integrating the transmission, driveshaft, and axle assembly into a single unit, in turn lowering the weight of the M8 GTE to 2,690 lb (1,220 kg).[2][3]
The M8 GTE was designed by BMW chief engineer Dominic Harlow.
Engine / Drivetrain[edit | edit source]
The M8 GTE features a 3,981 cc (4 L; 242.9 in3) twin-turbocharged V8 engine different from the 4.4 L twin-turbocharged V8 in the previous M6 GTLM. Codenamed P63/1, it is a derivative of the BMW N63 engine and produces 600 hp (608 PS; 447 kW) at 7,250 rpm and 500 ft·lb (678 N·m) of torque between 2,500 rpm and 7,250 rpm.[3] The engine is only 40% production based, as opposed to 95% for the previous M6 GTLM/GTE/GT3.[4]
The M8 GTE uses a six-speed sequential semi-automatic racing transmission driving the rear wheels.
