The 2018 Apollo Intensa Emozione (lit. Intense Emotion), also abbreviated as the Apollo IE (Apollo IE '18) or AIE, is a limited production hypercar produced by Apollo Automobil GmbH since 2019. The Apollo IE was added to Forza Horizon 4 in Series 9.[1]

In contrast to other modern hypercars, the Apollo IE is meant to be a tribute to the GT1 race cars of the 1990s and a "return to the truest, most organic form of the hyper-car", with the goal of capturing the spirit and emotion of the exotic cars of the 20th century while maximizing overall performance and thrill, including a high-revving Ferrari-derived naturally aspirated V12 engine.[2] It is also the first vehicle produced by Apollo since the Gumpert Apollo 14 years prior.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Apollo released a teaser video for the Apollo IE on October 17, 2017.[3] One week later, the IE was fully revealed. It is built in collaboration with HWA AG.[4][5]

The Intensa Emozione has a price of US$2,670,000 or €2,300,000 and was produced in only 10 units, all of which have already been sold.[6]

In June 2018, it was revealed that Apollo would be partnering with HWA AG, a tuning and racing team spun-off from Mercedes-Benz's AMG tuner division, to complete the final developmental stages of the car.[7]

Design[edit | edit source]

The Intensa Emozione features an exterior design inspired by airflow and nature, particularly insects and marine animals. Its interior is entirely based on nature, with a cocoon-style, teardrop-shaped carbon fiber tub cockpit, in the style of a leather-wrapped prototype race car. Apart from the natural thought, the Intensa Emozione was also intended to have a design that would stand out from all other sports cars.[8] Its design is also inspired by contemporary GT3, GT1, and LMP race cars, as well as fighter jets, sharks, and raptors.[5]

The IE's body is designed to facilitate maximum airflow, including the ability to pierce through and manipulate the air around and through the car. The convergence of the body panels illustrates radical surface depth and stunning body line continuity. Acuate creases and exposed wheels with five-spoke, forged BBS aluminum rims facilitate precise airflow streamlining while also resulting in a lightweight appearance with powerful stance. Every part of the car is designed for highly functional purposes with a radical approach on style, with prominent elements including the shark-like nose, distinctive side aero fins, large angled rear wing mounts, and trident triple exhausts. It features gullwing doors, much like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Pagani Huayra.[5]

The Intensa Emozione is composed almost entirely of carbon fiber,[9] albeit with high-strength steel, aluminum, and titanium components. The engine bay is left uncovered, allowing the air intake to take in maximum efficiency and performance.[8] The entire chassis has a weight of only 231 lb (105 kg).[5]

The Apollo IE has a 45%/55% weight distribution balance and a curb weight of 2,755 lb (1,250 kg). It sits at a minimum of 110 mm (4.3 in) from the ground in normal settings and 60 mm (2.4 in) in race mode.[10]

The IE also features bespoke carbon fiber front crash structures, which had previously been reserved for only the higher echelons of motorsport like Formula One. Brembo, a partner of Apollo, provides the IE with new carbon ceramic brakes with 380 mm (15 in)×34 mm (1.3 in), 6-piston caliper front brakes and 380 mm (15 in)×34 mm (1.3 in), 4-piston caliper rear brakes. The IE runs on road Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires or race Michelin slick tires which allow it to achieve lateral G forces in excess of 2.0 Gs.[5]

Suspension[edit | edit source]

The IE features Formula One-inspired double wishbone suspension with full push-rod and rocker arm architecture on both the front and rear, along with adjustable anti-roll bars. The dampers are adjustable and were provided by Bilstein.[5]

The development of the suspension system was not only designed for maximum performance, but also for carrying a targeted level of refinement for a capable yet reliable driving experience, one which allows the driver to have full control of comfort and performance levels with electronic damper adjustability at their fingertips and the practicality of an Electro-Hydraulic lifter system that can raise the IE's ride height by 50 mm (2 in) up to 30 km/h (19 mph) front and rear. All of this was achieved while also incorporating a pneumatic quick-lift system with four airjacks for easy pit-service operations in order to allow the IE to take on serious circuit events and Apollo's own Time Attack Program, which will be released at a later date.[5]

Engine[edit | edit source]

The Intensa Emozione uses a 6,300 cc (6.3 L; 384.4 in3) naturally aspirated V12 engine developed by Autotecnica Motori, HWA AG, and Apollo. It makes 780 hp (791 PS; 582 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 760 N·m (561 ft·lb) of torque at 6,000 rpm.[11] It has a reported redline of 9,000 rpm[11] and is based on the Ferrari F12berlinetta's F140 FC engine.[5][10]

Apollo chose to avoid using hybrid systems or forced induction in order to "deliver a modern, yet nostalgically pure, unadulterated sensory experience" as hybrid systems and forced induction, while they can provide better performance, make the car feel less natural to drive.

The IE feature three Engine Map modes that the driver can select: Wet, Sport, and Track. The selection is shown on the "Engine Map page" on the car's main display.[5]

Drivetrain[edit | edit source]

The Apollo IE uses a longitudinal 6-speed Hewland sequential transmission with fully interchangeable gear ratios that drives the rear wheels. It is operated via electro-pneumatic paddle shifters that move with the steering wheel.[5] Traction control has 12 levels that the driver can select, from less intrusive levels for high friction roads and sport driving to more intrusive levels for wet conditions and safe driving.[10] The gear ratios are as follows:

Final Drive 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th
3.44 2.85 2.23 1.82 1.53 1.29 1.12

Apollo uses this solution for a strong, race-proven transmission that provides significant weight reduction over a normal dual-clutch gearbox and instantaneous gear shifts at the same time. It is connected to the wheels by two superalloy lightweight semi-axles, designed by Austria-based Pankl Racing Systems AG.[5]

Performance[edit | edit source]

Apollo states that the Intensa Emozione is capable of reaching 60 mph (97 km/h) in 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 208 mph (335 km/h). At 186 mph (300 km/h), it generates over 2,976 lb (1,350 kg) of downforce, balanced with 44.5% (1,323 lb (600 kg)) at the front and 55.5% (1,653 lb (750 kg)) at the rear. It also has an aerodynamic efficiency rating in excess of 3, placing it closer to an LMP2 race car than a proper GT road car.[5][10]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Forza Horizon 4[edit | edit source]

In Forza Horizon 4, the Apollo IE is an exclusive car, initially considered to be one of the rarest cars in the game. It was first available as a reward in the Hyperspeed Trial event, available in Series 9 from May 30, 2019 14:30:00 GMT to June 6, 2019 14:29:59 GMT. This event is infamous for being among one of the most difficult Trial events ever released due to being three back-to-back Street Scene races set in wet conditions and the required cars being Class S2 Hypercars, which made for treacherous racing conditions that often led to crashes, spinouts, and missed turns. It was later purchasable in the #FORZATHON Shop in Series 11 for 2,000 FP from July 25, 2019 14:30:00 GMT to August 1, 2019 14:29:59 GMT, making it the most expensive #FORZATHON Shop-purchasable item in the game. It was made purchasable once again in Series 14 Spring for 1,000 FP from October 17, 2019 14:30:00 GMT to October 14, 2019 14:29:59 GMT, alongside the McLaren 12C Coupé.

The Apollo IE's main performance paramounts are its top-class handling, grip, and braking. It has the best handling and braking of any car in the Forza Horizon series, and its acceleration also serves to make it a worthy weapon on handling-focused tracks. Its main competitors are the Mosler MT900S, McLaren 720S Coupé PreOrder Car, Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione, Koenigsegg CCGT, Maserati MC12 Versione Corsa, Porsche 911 GT3 RS PreOrder Car, and Maserati MC12 Forza Edition. When fully upgraded, the Apollo IE's main engine can make up to 1,523 hp (1,136 kW), making it one of the most powerful V12 engines in the series, along with those of the MC12 Corsa '08 (1,530 hp (1,141 kW)) and Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Forza Edition (1,863 hp (1,389 kW)). In Class S2, the Apollo IE is a strong contender in handling-focused Road Racing Series routes (e.g. Horizon Festival Circuit). Here, it is aimed squarely at other strong contenders in Class S2 like the Ferrari F40 Competizione, Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster, Lamborghini Centenario LP 770-4, and Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR, but still remains inferior to the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak on handling-focused tracks.

Because of its extreme downforce, the Apollo IE's major performance shortcoming is its top speed; even with a top speed tune that uses the "speed bump" trick, it is capable of reaching only 449 km/h (279 mph) at most, placing it below the Koenigsegg Agera RS, Mosler MT900S, and Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione. In X Class, it is only decent on short to medium-length tracks, as with a handling-based tune (regardless of the engine used), it will usually reach 394 km/h (245 mph), placing it closer to the MC12 FE and even the McLaren Senna, although the IE has much more downforce than the Senna to compensate for this. The IE's extreme handling can also serve as a double-edged sword; the IE can sometimes oversteer through even the widest of corners, making this car more recommended for advanced drivers.

With the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak's introduction in Series 14, the Apollo IE's dominance on handling-focused routes in Class S2 has all but ended, due to the I.D. R's vastly superior handling.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The Apollo IE was discovered on the Forzathon icon in Forza Motorsport 7's April 2019 update,[12] hinting at its later playable appearance in Forza Horizon 4.
    • This was later taken down and replaced with the standard Forzathon icon in May 2019.
  • The Apollo IE was blocked from being able to be put in the Auction House before May 30, 2019, mostly because players modded the game in order to get this car early.
  • While generally considered a barely road legal hypercar, the Apollo IE is put in the Extreme Track Toys Championship (which consists of various extreme track cars, road legal or not).
  • In the Update 11 Spring season, the Apollo IE was the most expensive item in the Forzathon shop, costing 2000 FP.

Mistakes[edit | edit source]

  • Despite having a real world value of US$2.7 million, the Apollo IE has a value of 1,050,000 CR in the game.
    • Due to the car's rarity, the IE is generally sold for 8-digit prices in the Auction House up to 20,000,000 CR in spite of its in-game value being 1,050,000 CR.
