The Pagani Zonda R is a track day variant of the Pagani Zonda, produced between 2009 and 2011 in only 15 units.

The Zonda R uses the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR's racing V12 engine and was designed to be the fastest non-special edition Zonda model yet. Horacio Pagani has also suggested that he created the Zonda R as a testbed for certain components of the Pagani Huayra, the Zonda's replacement.[1][2]

Overview[edit | edit source]

Design / Chassis[edit | edit source]

The Zonda R's central carbon chassis features a roll cage and a rubber racing fuel cell with four fuel pumps and a quick refuel filler cap, in a similar vein to GT race cars. The Zonda R has a longer wheelbase by 47 mm (1.9 in) for increased stability. Its front and rear subframes are brand-new, built to accommodate new suspension geometry, and produced in Avional. The slick-shod wheels are new forged-magnesium center-lock models, which in conjunction with on-board pneumatic airjacks allow for rapid changing of the entire wheel assemblies.

The Zonda R is also longer by 394 mm (15.5 in) and has a longer track by 50 mm (2.0 in). For maximum downforce, the bodywork and aerodynamics have received alterations, including a longer front bonnet with flaps, a closed underbody, and a new rear overhang with an adjustable rear wing and race-derived diffuser; the Zonda R's rear bodywork is mostly composed of vent. These are intended to result in increased aerodynamic efficiency and downforce for maximum cornering speed. This is thought to be symptomatic of the need to keep the engine cool enough, even under heavy track use.

The Zonda R has a weight of 2,536 lb (1,150 kg) and a 46% / 54% front/rear weight distribution balance.

The Zonda R has a spartan interior, reflecting the car's racetrack aspirations and intended home, and features seats customized to the driver to offer maximum support. As before, the Digitek instrumentation provides essential information and the sophisticated telemetry allows a variety of sensors to monitor numerous aspects of the car.

Engine / Drivetrain[edit | edit source]

The Zonda R's engine is a 5,987 cc (6.0 L; 365.3 cu in) naturally aspirated V12 derived from Mercedes-AMG,[2] with a maximum output of 739 hp (551 kW; 750 PS) at 7,500 rpm[3] and 523 ft·lb (710 N·m) of torque at 5,700 rpm. It has a specific power output of 123 hp (92 kW; 125 PS) per liter and a bore and stroke ratio of 89.0 mm × 80.2 mm (3.5 in × 3.2 in).[3]

The Zonda R uses a six-speed XTrac 672 sequential manual transmission driving the rear wheels.[3]

Performance[edit | edit source]

  • 0 - 60 mph (0 - 97 km/h): 2.8 seconds
  • 0 - 100 mph (0 - 161 km/h): 5.6 seconds
  • Top speed: 224 mph (360 km/h)

The Zonda R has a power-to-weight ratio of 643 hp (479 kW; 652 PS) per tonne, or 3.43 lb (1.56 kg) per horsepower.
