The BMW M5 [F90] (leaderboard name: BMW M5 '18[1]) is a sports saloon based on the G30-codenamed BMW 5 Series.
Introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year, the F90 M5 differs from previous M5 models in that it features all-wheel-drive for the first time. It also succeeds the F10 M5 of the early 2010s.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Design / Chassis[edit | edit source]
The F90 M5 sports an updated version of the F10 M5's exterior and weighs at least 4,090 lb (1,855 kg).[2]
Engine / Drivetrain[edit | edit source]
The F90 M5 uses a 4,395 cc (4.4 L; 268.2 in3) twin-turbocharged V8, internally codenamed S63B44T4, which is essentially an evolution of the S63 from the previous generation.[3] It makes 592 hp (600 PS; 441 kW) and 553 ft·lb (750 N·m) of torque, 39 hp (40 PS; 29 kW) and 52 ft·lb (70 N·m) more than the F10 M5.[2][4]
As a departure from previous M5 models, the F90 M5 uses all-wheel-drive for the first time in a BMW M5. It uses an eight-speed automatic instead of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; the former was chosen for its durability and due to the fact that its shift times are not significantly slower than a DCT.[5] However, BMW chose to rely on a rear-biased design that is designed exclusively for driving dynamics with a true rear-wheel-drive mode included in the all-wheel-drive system as well.[4]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
Mistakes[edit | edit source]
- The F90 M5, like with the F13 M6, features an incorrect power output of 600 hp (447 kW), despite that 600 is actually its power rating in metric horsepower (PS).
- The F90 M5 appears poorly textured.
- The daytime running LED lights on the driver's side of the F90 M5 also do not function correctly.
- These have since been fixed as of the Series 7 update.
- The F90 M5 erroneously reuses the engine note of the F10 M5 despite that both cars actually sound different in real life.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
- The F90 M5's carbon fiber roof is permanently unpaintable.
